Course Description:
Using garments that you would like to keep wearing, you will be encouraged & shown ways that you can re-new them and continuing wearing them for many years. You could shorten an item, replace a zip, add pockets etc. Each week we will look at a new sewing skill or tip & you will be encouraged to include some of these on your new garment
Who is the course for?
If you would like to build on your sewing skills then this course is helpful as it will help you to gain some sewing machine practice, garment recycling and creativity. You can be a beginner to sewing or have years of experience – this course is helpful in avoiding waste and saving money as you repair/alter.
Do you gain any qualifications?
No – this course is not accredited.
Do you need to be interviewed or assessed before enrolling on the course?
Please bring 2-3 items for repairing to the first session and some ideas of what you would like to do – if you are new to sewing or upcycling, then starting with a simple idea can be a great way to build up your confidence + practice. There will be some sewing practice with the Janome sewing machine
What will you learn?
• Looking at your garment & deciding how you would like to proceed
• Seeing how your garment, fabric, seams, fastenings can be updated
• Marking, pinning & cutting your garment ready for sewing
• Adding any elements eg pocket, zip, lining, trim etc
• Take a picture before and a picture after to show a comparison & progression
How is the course delivered? What subjects or area will be looked at each week?
1. Introduction, looking at garments, deciding what repair is suitable
2. Start cutting up garments, start pinning + sewing
3. Seam finishes: French Seam, Flat Felled Seam & Overlocking
4. Pockets: In-seam or Patch (lined or unlined) attaching trims or embellishment
5. Finish garment + press, document by taking pictures of your work
