Essential Digital Skills
This course is designed for learners who have completed Digital Skills – Intermediate, or who are already confident using digital devices for everyday tasks and are now looking to sharpen their IT skills for work or more formal settings.
You’ll work towards the Essential Digital Skills Qualification (Level 1), accredited by Gateway Qualifications. This nationally recognised qualification focuses on the digital skills needed in modern workplaces and daily life.
You’ll build confidence across a range of key areas:
- Device and system management: Understand how operating systems work, check for updates and keep apps and software secure
- Handling and evaluating information: Learn how to assess whether online information is reliable, up to date and relevant
- Privacy and data protection: Protect your data and device using best practice in digital security
- File management: Organise and store digital files across devices using clear naming conventions and folder structures
- Health and wellbeing: Understand how to avoid physical and mental strain while using digital devices
- Creating and editing content: Produce professional documents, newsletters, reports and CVs; use spreadsheets to create charts and analyse data
- Online communication: Use email, instant messaging, social media and forums in appropriate and effective ways
- Transacting online: Manage account preferences, upload/download documents, compare products and make secure purchases
- Being safe and responsible online: Understand your rights and responsibilities when using digital content, including the risks of misuse
Before starting, you’ll complete a short assessment to ensure this is the right level for you. If you’ve just completed Digital Skills – Intermediate, you can progress directly.
After passing the Level 1 exam, you can explore further learning through specialist courses such as: Website Design, Excel, or PowerPoint workshops
