Course Overview
This three‑day course introduces learners to the vibrant world of Carnival MAS (Masquerade), focusing on the collaborative design and creation of Caribbean‑inspired carnival costumes. Participants will work collectively as a MAS band section to design, construct, and decorate wearable costume pieces that will be showcased in a local London carnival parade in partnership with a recognised Carnival Arts organisation.
Learners will explore the cultural roots of Carnival, experiment with costume‑making techniques, and contribute to a unified visual theme representing the Waltham Forest community.
Who the Course Is For
This course is suitable for:
-Adults and young people (16+) from the Waltham Forest community
-Individuals interested in Carnival culture, MAS traditions, and creative arts
-Beginners and those with some creative experience
-A willingness to collaborate collectively
Course Aims
-To introduce learners to the history and cultural significance of Caribbean Carnival MAS
-To develop practical skills in costume construction, wire bending, feather work, embellishment, and thematic design
-To build teamwork, creativity, and community pride through collective costume‑making
-To produce wearable MAS costume pieces for use in a London carnival event
