Course Title: Social Sewing – Creativity in Community
Course Description:
This 6 week course will allow students to sew in a creative environment sharing skills with other creatives, guided by a lecturer. Community creativity is beneficial not only for personal sewing practice but also for mental health, feel part of a community in the sewing room and extend not only your skills but sense of connection and well being. Learners can choose to bring their own project to work on or choose from 2 simple projects to create over the 6 weeks. Each week the lecturer will demonstrate a key sewing technique or make to the group to widen and develop skills, the lecturer will then be on hand to assist in individual projects while creating an inclusive and convivial atmosphere in which to work. Learners will be encouraged to share their work with the group throughout the course.
Example of weekly skills-
Week 1. Seam finishes.
Week 2. A simple cushion cover
Week 3. Lapped zip insertion
Week 4. Gathering fabric
Week 5. A simple elasticated skirt
Week 6. How to make a pattern of something you love.
Who is the course for?
This course is ideal for people who can use a sewing machine and are looking to sew in a social setting and share ideas with other sewer’s.

No – this course is not accredited.

Essential equipment and resources
Sewing machines, patten paper and calico are provided by the college.
• Sewing kit – including scissors, pins, tape measure, ruler, needles
• Fabric for individual projects
• Thread
