Boro Hanten Jacket: Slow Stitching & Sustainable Wear
Course Description
This ten-week garment-making course guides you through the construction of a Boro Hanten-inspired jacket, combining sustainable textile principles with structured sewing machine techniques.
While inspired by the philosophy of boro and repair culture, the focus of this course is on building a well-constructed, wearable jacket using reclaimed fabrics. You will learn how to draft and adapt a simple Hanten-style pattern, cut accurately, assemble panels, and construct a fully finished garment using a sewing machine.
Hand stitching will be introduced in the final stage of the course to add subtle decorative or reinforcing details, inspired by sashiko traditions, but the core of the jacket will be machine constructed.
Over ten weeks, you will develop technical confidence, accuracy, and quality finishing skills while creating a durable, contemporary garment rooted in sustainability.
Participants will leave with a finished or near-finished Boro Hanten jacket, practical garment-making skills, and confidence to continue working with reclaimed textiles independently.
