Course description
This beginner‑friendly course introduces learners to the essential skills and techniques used in cake decorating. Through hands‑on activities and tutor guidance, learners will explore cake decoration as a creative craft, building confidence while learning practical methods that can be developed further.

The course covers the use of common cake decorating tools and materials, alongside basic design principles such as colour, balance and presentation. Learners will be supported to practise techniques at a steady pace, with opportunities to experiment and develop their own creative style.

What you will learn
You will be introduced to essential cake decorating equipment, including piping bags and nozzles, spatulas, turntables and fondant tools, with guidance on safe use and care. The course explores different cake bases and frosting types, such as buttercream and fondant, and how to choose suitable combinations for decoration.

Practical sessions include crumb coating, achieving a smooth finish, piping simple shapes and borders, and working with fondant to cover cakes and create basic decorative elements. You will also develop introductory piping skills and gain confidence in handling materials and tools.

Who this course is for
This course is suitable for beginners with little or no previous cake decorating experience. It is ideal for learners interested in developing creative skills for personal enjoyment or future learning.

Progression
Learners may choose to progress to further cake decorating, sugarcraft or creative courses offered by Waltham Forest Adult Learning Service.
