ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL)

ESOL courses are for people whose first language is not English and who do not have a Level 2 qualification in English.

Our Classes
All our classes are friendly and engaging. They build practical skills in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing to use English confidently in home and work life. They also incorporate digital, employability and numeracy skills and include enrichment activities. Levels range from Pre-Entry to Entry 1, 2, 3 then Levels 1 and 2. For full details of course content at each level please go to our website Waltham Forest Adult Learning Service

Accreditation
All courses, except Pre-Entry and Introduction to ESOL courses, can lead to nationally recognised Ascentis Skills for Life ESOL qualifications. Some Introduction to ESOL courses also include a Gateway Living and Working in the UK Award.

At Entry level the lecturer decides with you which exam(s) you are ready to take based on your diagnostic assessments.

At Levels 1 and 2, learners take an Award in Speaking & Listening and complete a Gateway Living and Working in the UK portfolio in Semester 1 (Sept–Feb) and Reading and Writing Awards in Semester 2 (Feb–July).

At all levels it may sometimes be agreed that a learner will not take exams if that is the most appropriate decision based on diagnostic assessment.

Equipment and resources
Please bring a folder, pen, pencil and notebook. For online lessons a PC or laptop will be needed. This can be borrowed from the service - please talk to your lecturer.

What next?
When you have completed all exams at one ESOL level you can progress to the next level. After ESOL Level 2 you can go on to Functional Skills English and/or vocational courses and volunteering opportunities. Improving your English can lead to employment, better employment or self-employment.
