Millinery beginners - Felt Hat
Five Week Course
Course Description:
This course is suitable for beginners who would like to make something for themselves or a friend.
This class is suitable for beginners in hat making and for anybody with more experience who would like to learn something new. Must be able to hand sew.
Using wool felt as a raw material, you will learn to shape it into a hat with a brim, using millinery blocks. We will cover the anatomy of a hat and how to fit them to heads of all shapes and sizes. You will learn traditional millinery methods to finish your hat and how to use up the left over felt to make a simple but effective trim.

What you will cover:
-Introduction to raw materials for millinery such as felt, straw, foundation materials and stiffeners
-Identify tools of the trade such as blocks, tape measures, pins, scissors, wire cutters, iron, steamer, clingfilm/bags, calico, string, thimble
-Be able to measure head size accurately – self and others (for those wanting to make for friends/family/clients)
-Block felt crown (and brim if applicable and possible)
-Introduction to trimmings such as feathers, flowers, veiling, crystals etc including use of left over materials as trimmings for sustainability
-Finishing to wear/present final design
Essential equipment – Please bring a pen and paper and a bag/box to take your finished hat home with you – or wear it! If you have a favourite pair of scissors and your own sewing kit, you are welcome to bring them.

This course is suitable for beginners and those with more experience. Must be able to hand sew.
