Beginners Traditional Upholstery 2024-2025

Who is the course for?

This course is for those who would like to learn the basic skills of traditional upholstery.
It is aimed at those with no prior knowledge or experience of upholstery as well as those who wish to refresh their skills. It is for those who would like to gain knowledge of the history of upholstered furniture and where to go to see collections of fine and domestic furniture.

What will you learn?
Week 1: you will be introduced to the main tools used in traditional upholstery and learn how to strip down and make basic repairs to a piece of upholstered furniture

Week 2: working on a small drop-in seat frame you will begin to build up the foundation layers starting with the webbing. You will be shown the different types of webbing and learn how to apply it to achieve the correct tension

-Week 3: you will learn about the different types of hessian and how and why they are used. You will measure out and tack hessian over the webbing on your frame and sew bridle ties across the surface for the stuffing
-Week 4: you will be introduced to some of the different types of stuffings and fillings used in upholstery and learn how to apply coir fibre to build up the main structure of the seat
-Week 5: we will look at different fabric designers and manufacturers and learn about cutting lists and plans. You will be shown how to tack calico over the stuffing to create a firm seat pad
-Week 6: we will put the finishing touches to the drop-in seat frame and apply the bottoming cloth to the underside
