Course Title: Volunteer Training Course (English Conversation Clubs)

Time: 9:30-3:30pm
Venues: Queens Road Learning Centre or The Junction in Leytonstone
Who is the course for? This opportunity is open to anyone, of any age or background, who would like to, and has the time to, volunteer to run informal English Conversation Clubs for non-English speaking adults in the borough of Waltham Forest. We have clubs currently running in schools, children’s centres, places of worship and community centres.
You need to have excellent communication skills, an ability to get on with a diverse group of people, and be able to commit to supporting an English Conversation Club after the course finishes.
As the course is accredited at Level 2 and you will be building up a portfolio of work, you need to be able to write confidently.
Do you gain any qualifications? Yes, the course is accredited by City and Guilds. You will be working towards the Level 3 Award in Supporting Learning.
Do you need to be interviewed or assessed before enrolling on the course: Yes. You need to request and fill in an initial application form (available from conversationclub.als@walthamforest.gov.uk) and may be invited to come in for an informal discussion.
What will the training cover?
• How to support, manage and organise groups of learners who have English as a Second Language
• How to assess learners’ interests so that meaningful and relevant topics are selected for conversation
• How to select appropriate and inclusive learning resources and materials for discussion
• How to evaluate and improve learning support practice
