Who is the course for?
This course is aimed at adults who want to learn more about gardening techniques. There will be class-based and outdoor, practical learning in a public space. You will build up confidence and knowledge in a range of gardening skills. There will be some written work over the course, with practical tasks to develop your abilities.

Entry requirements:
There are no specific prior achievements required to take this qualification.

Do you gain any qualifications:
You will gain a City and Guilds Level 1 Award in Practical Horticulture Skills.
What will you learn:
• How to prepare the ground for sowing/planting
• Weed identification and management. Know your enemy! What is a weed? What are the most common ones and what is their life cycle. Knowing this will help to reduce them.
• When, where and how to prune a range of shrubs for better structure and health of the plant.
• We will look at and practice good management of grass and turf for different effects.
• Plant identification - A range of plants from shrubs to perennials and annuals will be studied. You will gain confidence in identifying each type.
•Types of soil - Knowing the type, structure and state of your soil is fundamental to good gardening. We will explore a range of soil types and learn how they can be improved.
How you'll learn:
Practical work in this course is taught at St Mary’s Churchyard in Walthamstow Village.
Essential equipment and resources:
• Suitable clothes you don't mind getting dirty in
• Gardening gloves
• Notebook and pen
What you can do after completion:
You can progress from this course onto Level 1 Certificate or Diploma or an apprenticeship.

• Your lecturer will talk to you about progression during your course.
• This course could lead to volunteering, training and employment opportunities in horticulture. Your tutor will offer advice and information on these throughout the course, including options for studying a City and Guilds Level 2 qualification in horticulture, which could lead to employment and enterprise development in the horticulture sector.
